For a long time I have felt uneasy about companies accessing my personal data and tracking my behavior online. Finding ProtonMail for simplified email end-to-end encryption set me off on a journey towards reclaiming my privacy online.

Here is a list of tools you can use to do the same thing. Being a pragmatic person who thinks that tools only are worth mentioning if I end up actually using them, I will only list tools I now use on a daily basis.

  • ProtonMail end-to-end encrypted emails much simplified. Free public beta invites are distributed as they upscale their operations. You can even send encrypted emails to people without public keys, provided you hand them a password some other way.
  • ownCloud host your own “Dropbox”. File encryption exists as an option if you don’t own the machine.
  • Ghostery Browser Add-on great tool for blocking website trackers.
  • DuckDuckGo a very capable alternative to good old data-harvesting Google search.

That’s a start!

Good Luck
